The Superfast Berkshire project has now completed the procurement activity for Phase 3 that aims to achieve superfast broadband coverage of at least 97% in each of the six Berkshire local authority districts by the end of 2019.

The procurement was structured into 2 lot areas, one focused on Berkshire towns which was awarded to BT, and one focused on Berkshire countryside that was awarded to Gigaclear. These were two outstanding bids that will see superfast broadband coverage extended to 99.6%, with all 6 districts individually set to exceed 99% before the end of 2019. An interactive map has been created showing the deployment footprint of the phase 3 contracts. A launch event was held on 21st July, and press statements were issued to the media.

Superfast Berkshire has invested £4.2m of public sector funding, made up of;

a) Funding that could not be used under Phase 2 contracts that has been re-applied to Reading (£382,500) and Wokingham (£615,000) from the respective Borough Councils, Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership and BDUK

b) Funding of £3.2m released from our Phase 1 contract due to underspend on planned delivery and our share in revenue from the take-up of service on the 120 cabinets deployed. This funding has been applied across all Berkshire districts.

Under the new Phase 3 contracts;

  • BT will make a capital investment of £5.5m, see an upgrade to superfast speeds for 7,413 new properties that are expected to be delivered by December 2019.

  • Gigaclear will contribute a capital investment of £5.7m, see an upgrade to 6,111 new properties and expect to complete their rollout by September 2019.
